To meet the growing demand for very high sun protection, Marie-Claire Castagné decided to specialise in ANTI-UV and ANTI-INFRARED hats.

The company is based in her hometown of La Baule, in the Loire-Atlantique region. It now has a branch in Paris, in the 18th arrondissement.

Through meetings with dermatologists and other skin specialists, Marie-Claire realised that there was something missing in the sun protection market: a lightweight hat that offered very high sun protection and stayed cool in the sun. We all know that hats protect us from the sun, but they don't all protect in the same way, just as sun creams don't all have the same protection factor.

Marie-Claire's goal, with the support of her husband and then her daughter, was to create the most protective hat possible. However, a protective hat often means a hat that keeps you warm and that you take off because it is heavy (due to the very tight weave required to achieve this high level of protection).

The winning trio of ‘performance, lightness and freshness’ – in other words, permanent protection because it is comfortable – has been the guiding principle behind the company's years of research and development. Today, this goal has been achieved and the technical design of Soway hats has been patented.

Indeed, the ‘Soway’ is a product that combines three qualities never before seen in a single ha:

  • ANTI-UV: VERY HIGH SUN PROTECTION: UV protection 50+, Australian and New Zealand standard AS/NZS 4399, the most stringent,
  • FEATHERWEIGHT (less than 100 grams): you can keep it on your head,
  • ANTI-INFRARED: it rejects heat and stays cool in the sun.

Everything has been designed and thought out for greater comfort and effectiveness:

  • The brim or visor of the ‘Soway’ is lined with dark fabric to reduce the effects of glare in the eyes and combat AMD.
  • It is ventilated.
  • Its size is adjustable.
  • It rolls up into a pouch supplied with the hat

The components of Soway products are French (the base material, fabric, ribbons, etc.), the technical development is also carried out in France, and manufacturing takes place in Portugal.

Its high-performance sun protection and comfortable hats have enabled the Soway brand to be a Partner of Dermatology Congresses since 2014.

Although these technical hats meet all the criteria for very high sun protection, they are not considered ‘medical’ hats. The brand wanted to combine elegance with health: Soway hats are worn by Angelina Jolie, Princess Charlene of Monaco, and many others.
